Brand Story

One Mission Triggered by One Idea

A rainy day encounter in 1987 changed the life of Kenny Chen, Karma’s founder. It also led to the birth of an international brand. One gloomy afternoon during the rainy season in Taipei, Kenny noticed a woman struggling to fit her father’s wheelchair into the trunk of her car. He stopped to offer his help.

The wheelchair was heavy– difficult even for a strong man like him to lift. Even more frustratingly, after all the effort of trying to squeeze in the wheelchair, the chair proved too unwieldy to allow the trunk to close. Kenny couldn’t forget the despair of this woman, soaked in the rain and being splashed by noisy passing traffic, or the weight and the clumsiness of her father’s wheelchair.

“Did it really have to be this way? Couldn’t wheelchairs be better?”

Drawing on his background in industrial engineering and management, Kenny started 「 KARMA 」, committing himself and his company to improving the lives and the futures of the physically challenged and helping them live out loud.

Over 25 years, Kenny has assembled top-notch R&D teams from several countries, which have created numerous innovative designs and earned over one hundred patents.

More importantly, Karma’s user-centered wheelchairs, aimed at providing the best solutions for various needs, have won the hearts of customers around the EU, including in the U.K., Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, etc.
The passion and compassion inherent in mindfully caring for the physically challenged is a hallmark of the entire Karma staff and its global supply chain partners.

One Mission Brings On Much Fulfillment

Is it possible for someone with severe disability to go outdoors and enjoy the nature’s beauty? Yes. A chin-controlled power wheelchair allows slow and sure navigation while indulging in the scenery.

In the winter of 2004, Mr. Chui, a Korean man with a physical disability, decided to journey across the United States in a wheelchair. Everyone thought this would be impossible– except for our Korean agent, who asked 「 KARMA 」 to support Mr. Chui’s quest. We immediately agreed to help fulfill his dream.

Mr. Chui chose the Saber power wheelchair, a product of 「 KARMA 」’s KP-4 series. Given the diverse and harsh road conditions that Mr. Chui would face, we worked for ten straight days on dusty country roads to conduct road test after road test. We put the chair under extremely demanding and brutal conditions– two hundred kilometers with a full load– so that we could ensure that Mr. Chui would be able to weather his journey safely.

Five months later, Mr. Chui sprinted into New York City. He had successfully crossed the United States from coast to coast, traveling through 17 states and over 10,000 kilometers in an inspirational journey unthinkable even to most able-bodied people.
With 「 KARMA 」 behind him, Mr. Chui is living out a full and meaningful life, unlimited by his physical disability.
